To raise more capital crypto projects closing in on listing day usually have a presale. After minting and issuing tokens, a certain amount of total token supply becomes available for sale at low prices to the buyers in the primary market. After presale, tokens will be listed in Exchanges where secondary market transactions and trading take place. Users can go to a centralized or decentralized exchange to sell or buy more. Many newcomers to the crypto space miss out on these events because they don’t know what they are or why they are significant. For those that find a crypto project attractive and want to get in as early as possible, they can register for the whitelist to join the presale of the project. Projects also do this to help grow their community by allowing private and public sales of their tokens. These token sales can vary in form and facilitator. So let’s have a look.

I- Key Terminologies

Newcomers to the crypto space often find the jargon quite intimidating at first, but once you understand it it’s much easier to navigate the space and to know what’s going on. Here is some key terminology in order to better understand presales.

Cryptocurrency: Is a digital medium of exchange that works on cryptographic principles and a decentralized network.

Fiat: Is a currency and also medium of exchange that is issued by the central bank of a country e.g. the dollar $.

Presale: A collection of methods i.e ICO, IDO, IEO that are used to generate additional capital for a cryptocurrency project before listing.

Tokens: A general term used for cryptocurrencies. Each cryptocurrency has a native token that people buy, sell, or use. Often “Token” and “Coin” words are used interchangeably.

ICO: Is an Initial Coin Offering and is a marketing tool cryptocurrencies use to raise capital. It is when a crypto project will sell tokens directly to investors before the project is listed.

CEX: Centralized Exchange

DEX: Decentralized Exchange

IEO: An Initial Exchange Offering is a cryptocurrency offering where an exchange oversees the token sale and ensures a vetting process.

IDO: An Initial Dex Offering is similar to an IEO but is instead hosted by a DEX and the user must conduct research before investing in a project.

NFT: A Non-Fungible Token is a unique digital certificate of ownership that cannot be copied, subdivided, or substituted and is stored on a blockchain.

Now that we know the essential crypto terminologies, we can dig into presale and crypto investment.

II- What Is a Presale

Presales are a variety of marketing tools for a crypto project that allows people to buy in early into a project before its listing. These can be split up into 2 groups, private and public sales. The private sale is where only specific people can join via an invite or a minimum investment and the public is open to all in some cases, users can join a whitelist to enter.

When participating in an ICO or any of these presale events, early users usually get a discount on coins when buying them straight from the project and getting in before it’s listed. After a project has its ICO and coins are distributed a project will then become available on Exchanbegs (CEX or DEX) for secondary market traders.

III- How Presale works

ICOs were very popular at the beginning stages of crypto funding, very similar to an IPO but because the crypto classification needed a new term. In ICOs depending on the investment amount, most projects are required by law to run Anti Money Laundry (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) verification before transferring tokens to an investor’s wallet; however, the process is usually very easy and straightforward like submitting your legal name, ID and country of residency., etc. Users then pay for the tokens and on a specified day, they are distributed to all early investors.

On the other hand, IEOs have become very popular among investors mostly since a reputable exchange might be willing to list a token after undergoing a specific vetting process. Exchanges also get a cut of transaction fees or payment for hosting the event. Not all exchanges host IEOs and an IEO as an event is different from a listing. In a CEX, only liquidity is gathered and a listing is not guaranteed.

An IDO gives users more freedom because any crypto can have an opportunity to generate liquidity, and it’s not up to the discretion of an exchange who is allowed to be funded. Many more investors are also allowed to participate. Users need to do their own research and ensure they invest in projects they think will do well. However, some Exchanges, especially a DEX, will put all participants in a pool or lottery for buying newly listed tokens in their platforms; however, it is often not a case in the presale.

Presales allow the community that has been interested in a project from a very early stage to be rewarded for their support by getting major discounts on coins. By the time coins are listed investors stand to make major gains on their tokens. Some other benefits include:
